Deception to Weight Gain
I had an interview today with a reporter from Michigan.
Let me give you the back story...
About 1 ½ ago a got a letter. It looked like an official letter from the State of Minnesota wanting me to renew my business filing. It struck me as odd, as I was almost positive, I had already renewed.
Well, fast forward two days later. I am filling out the paperwork sent in the letter, only to find out they need a check. I don’t have checks for my business since it is all done online. So, I hop on the State’s website to see if I can renew online.
Sure enough, I can.
But even better, I already had renewed for that year…just like I thought.
I go back to the letter. I found it odd that the check wasn’t going to be made out to the state. I then proceed to look up the initials of who the check was to be made out to.
It was a private company. One that charged EXTRA to file a renewal for your business.
The letter looked so official. There was no indication that it had come from a private company UNLESS you were intentional and read the itty-bitty fine print.
I proceeded in filing a BBB complaint.
Then a couple of months later I was contacted by a reporter in Lansing Michigan asking about my complaint. I answered her questions and sent her a picture of the letter I was sent.
Now, she is creating a podcast story about the three brothers that own the business I was contacted by and 80 other similar deceptive businesses.
To be clear, what the company was doing was legal.
My problem was that it was DECEPTIVE.
I like to think I am a pretty cautious person, and I was VERY close to falling into the trap of this company’s half-truths. Even showing it to my husband, he agreed that it was a good catch.
Reflecting back on the interview, I realized, I have a lot in common with the reporter.
I work to expose deception.
But my focus is on the deceptions that lead women to use food as a drug and their bodies as a punching bag.
See, Satan uses all these half-truths. They aren’t outright lies, otherwise, we would dismiss them and he wouldn’t have a chance at getting us to believe them.
So, he uses deception, half-truths.
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:4
Ones like “I’m not enough”.
This thought is one that I coach on so often. The truth of this is we aren’t enough. We are flawed and human. But the deception comes when we ignore the fact that we are enough THROUGH CHRIST. Jesus makes us enough. We don’t have to be any more or any less.
If we aren’t INTENTIONAL about catching and cleaning up these lies, they will lead to some pretty serious consequences in our lives.
Consequences of excess weight, strained relationships, financial stress, depression, anxiety, burn-out, hopelessness… and the list goes on.
A fortune made by people who tell lies amounts to nothing and leads to death. … Proverbs 21:6
I’m so glad I listened to the voice inside of me telling me that something was off with that letter. I am thankful I took the time to be intentional and think through the situation. I am hopeful that it will help others stop being deceived.
Now, you do the same.
Listen to that Spirit inside of you.
Be intentional to think through how the enemy deceives you and how that might affect your life.
Then be hopeful in the fact that you can be a light to show others there is life through the Spirit.
