You’re a what?
Why would people need a coach?
Like… how can you really help them just by talking to them?
I get this all the time. Someone asks me what I do and I tell them I’m a health and life coach.
That’s usually when I get a blank stare. Maybe a half smile and nod if I’m lucky.
So, for those of you that are curious about exactly what I do, I will try my best to describe it here.
All of you know what you need to do to change a certain aspect of your life. Maybe you want to lose weight. Maybe you want to be happier. Or maybe you want to stop yelling at your kids. You know what you need to do (even though some of you tell yourself you don’t, you really do know) but seems like you are unable to follow through. You even take a few steps to get to your goal. But after a while, you fall back into old habits. Nothing seems to change and it feels like you just keep recycling what you did before and feel just as miserable.
This is where coaching becomes the secret sauce.
It all comes down to what you’re thinking. Actually, from the Christian perspective, the lies that Satan tells us that we choose to believe.
“Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life.” Proverbs 4:23 NCV
Let me illustrate by using an analogy. You have this fairly new, gently used computer. Your computer works fine, but you notice that it isn’t starting up as fast as it used to. Loading websites becomes slower. Often it sits and buffers when opening any program.
You become a little annoyed and frustrated. You wonder why and even try to delete some files and programs you don’t need any more. It helps some, but you can tell, the problem is just slowly getting worse.
Now, you have a choice. Live with the problem, trying to solve it on your own or take it into a technician that would help you find the answer to the malfunction.
You could live with it, but you know the life of that computer will be sub-optimal and probably shortened. Or, if you take it into a technician it could diagnose the problem and hopefully solve the issue. In the end, the life of the computer would be enhanced and maybe even extended if you took it in.
You decided to try out the technician. The technician finds a virus. This virus has been lurking in the background, hiding in the shadows. It is sneaky and has been worming its way into every file, every program, every little part of the computer.
You can hardly tell it is there. It took a technician to help you see it and bring it out of the shadows.
The technician tells you that you can restore the computer. The tech believes you will be able to get it back up running smoothly and efficiently again. The process to get it back up and running will take some special conditions though.
But when it is all said and done, it will all be worth it.
This is coaching. Your brain is the computer. For the most part, it works fine, but you know there are some issues that need to be addressed. I, as the coach, am the technician. I bring thoughts and beliefs to your awareness. Some of them, you don’t even realize you have. You start to see the stumbling blocks your thoughts are putting in your path. I give you the tools, accountability and support to help you fix the computer which will ultimately help your life run a little more efficiently.
What I, as the coach really want you to see, is the Satan is the virus turned on to destroy. He’s lurking in the shadows, telling you lies. He is very persistent and soon we just start believing these lies, like they are truth.
The Holy Spirit is the powerful, anti-virus software that has been already installed on your computer. Unfortunately, it had been turned off, allowing the virus to run rampant. You as the operator need to be aware of the virus first. Then you get to make the decisions to let the virus keep working or work on eradicating it. If you decide to eradicate the virus, you can reboot the anti-virus software and get the main operating system back up and running.
Simple as that.
Did I lose you?
If so, I’ll give you the basic equation of coaching. It looks like this:
Your Brain + Satan’s Lies – God’s Truth = Bad Habits and Self-Destruction
Coaching + You + God's Truth = Awareness of your Thoughts and Perspective Change
You + Coaching Tools + Holy Spirit’s Power of Love and Self-Discipline = Positive Habits and Thriving Life
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
That, right there, is life changing.
This equation can be applied to any type of coaching (health, relationship, business, goal setting, time management). My wheel house revolves around women. Specifically, moms that want/need to lose weight. Moms that are tired of being tired. Moms that are ready to be confident in who God made them to be so they can be example for their children. Moms that are looking for more joy.
