What do you do when NOTHING works?
How do you react when EVERYTHING is going wrong?
As I am writing this, I am trying to deal with 5 different tech issues at once.
Nothing is working right.
I can feel myself getting frustrated.
I can feel the anger and annoyance building up inside.
That’s when I glance to the kitchen.
“I’m hungry. Maybe I should get a snack.”
Yep. That bad habit that I thought I had tamed pops up again. I turn to food when I start feeling frustrated, angry, annoyed or just plain mad.
It may make me feel better in the moment. But, only for a second. When I get back to the tech issues, the frustration just starts flooding back. Along with that, I'll be frustrated I ate.
If I had been using willpower to stop myself from eating, I would have gave in at this moment.
I would have thrown my hands in the air and declared, “I DESERVE THIS for the day I’m having.”
But I’m not using willpower any more. It’s a limited resource. It doesn’t help in situations like these in which all my brain power and will to do better has dried up.
Nope.
Will power doesn’t work for the long term.
I had to figure out what would work for the long term.
It was mindset and habit change.
Mindset to start realizing I could choose something different, something better for my future because God already promised me that.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11
Habit change to start strengthening that automated system to work FOR me; not against me.
I appeals to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Don not be conformed to this world, but the transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12: 1-2
So, I may have glanced into the kitchen. I even had the thought, “Oh, I could really use a cookie right now.”
I didn’t act on it though. I didn’t change my plan. I didn’t over eat.
That’s what happens when you ditch the willpower (that most other diets teach) and start learning how to manage your mind and create a LIFESTYLE that LASTS!
So, getting back to my questions. What do you do when everything goes wrong?
You write a blog post.
Just kidding!
First, turn to God in prayer.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6
You manage your mind. You feel your feelings instead of eat them.
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9
And then you walk away to find an expert 😉
